day 8 ft lauderdale

It's been a couple days since I have updated the blog/diary. There just wasnt much to say about the last couple days. Had a nice day at sea and then for the final day of the first leg of the voyage the ship stopped at Princess Cays. I did nt get off at Princess cay and enjoyed a nice quiet relaxing day on board. Swan in the almost empty pool, got my choice of deck chair and read most of the afternoon. Last night was a lot of fun. Played a music trivia where you had to guess the name and artist from a 30 second clip with a hint of a body part in each song title. I came in second losing to the winning team by one point. Not bad considered I flew solo on this particular trivia. After that played a game called The Quest. This game was hilarious in that the moderator would ask for something like “three right shoes” and you would have to run up and show him what he asked for. The first team got three pointes 2nd team got 2 etc.. It started out easily enough then he started asking for things like a bra, or three men's shirts – so people started stripping off to get the items. It doesnt sound as fun just writing it but believe me it wqas a great time.

Today started sort of slow. There was some problem with disembarkation and they didnt start the process until after 9:30 but had everyone off the ship by 11:15 and then got the T4ransit passengers off and back on in pretty much record time. I had a swim and then relaxed for a bit then lunch and a nap and then got up for dinner. Pretty tough day, huh? I'm writing this after dinner as I wait until it's time to go to the evening show. The good news is that it looks like the entertainment will be different this week. One new production show, new comedian, a vocal impressionist, etc. I was resigned to just wandering and people watching this week but it looks like I'll be busy in the evenings again. Gotta go so I can get a decent seat at the show tonight. I'll be back later!

I'm back. The All Abord show was sort of - meh. Mostly the same as the first one but with a different comedian. I didnt care for this comedian as much as the first one. Then had some fun with an Classic Rock Trivi

Day 5 Cozumel, Mexico

After a relaxing day at sea yesterday - today was anything but. I had gto be out for my excursion to the Mayan Ruins at Tulum at 7:20 am so the alarm rang at 6:00 am so I of course snoozed it three times. I was ready to go when they opened the Gangway at about 7:00 and walked down one pier and up a different one to board a ferry to Playa del Carmen. The morning then started with a minor disaster. I reached in my bag to get my camera to take a picture of the Caribbean Princess and found that my water bottle hadnt been closed as tightly as one might have wished and leaked all over making my beach towel a sodden mess but also wetting the camera. I could not get the power button to work all day and as of this writing it still will not power on. RIP Sony Cybershot. You were a wonderful camera and I'm sorry I killed you. So the Tulum pictures are all taken with my phone I dont know how well they will turn out.

Getting to Tulum cpnsists of a 45 minute ferry ride to Playa del Carmen (Carmen's Beach) Then aqn hour drive to Tulum. Then a mile walk to the Archaeological site. Then another half mile to the ruins themselves. Th ruins were quite impressive. Much more detailed then the ones I saw at Altun Ha. I hope my pictures come out. We were at the ruins for about an two hours then the mile and a half walk, hour busride and 45 minute ferry ride. Off the ship from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. Then back to the cabin for a much needed shower before dinner. I had turbot for the first time. It was a very nice white fish with a mild taste and a very yummy sauce. The a production show and geography trivia. Now Im debasting a late night swim. We have to put out clocks ahead one hour tonight so I may just call it a night early read and go to bed and let tomorrow be a late night .

Day 4 - Roatan, Honduras

Today was a port day but I treated it like a day at sea. Since I have a very long day planned tomorrow I thought today would be a nice day to relax and recharge. With that intent I woke up at 8:00 am and couldn't get back to sleep – Isn't it always the way? Si I got up hsad a nice breakfast and was finished in time to do some Zumba to work off the breakfast I had just eaten. After exercising my body I exercised my mind with morning trivia. After that most everyone got off the ship played a race car video game on the kinect and then brunchtime trivia. Then a nice lunch and grab a deck chair to sun for about 45 minutes – dip in the pool and then sun for another half hour. Back to the cabin for a quick shower and a nap and up in time for 4:00 trivia.

This evening started with a yummy dinner. Then went to see the comedian. He was very good. Enjoyed him much more than the magician last night. Then a break to get ready for tomorrows excursion to the Mayan Ruins and to write this post. Before bed I'm going up to the 70's disco Love boat deck party and then to bed early as we leave at 7:20 am tomorrow. Oh well. I can sleep when I'm dead.

Day 3 - Grand Cayman

Sometimes I think this blog is a bit boring. Reading through it, it tends to focus on what my daily menu was and a round up of trivia and me raving about how wonderful things are. I'm gong to change that up a bit today. Now before I get into today I want to say. I'm having a great time and I firmly believe that the worst day spent on a Cruise is better than a good day during my work-a-day life. However, as this is a diary for me to remember what this vacation I want to be accurate. For those who read this - I little drama and tension may make it more interesting so here it goews.

Today we were at Grand Cayman Island. Grand Cayman is a tender port, which means that there is no dock large enough to handle the ship, so the ship anchors in the harbor and small boats ferry the passengers from the ship to the dock. Tender ports tend to limit flexibility about going out to port and back to the ship and out again because each round trip is a bit of a hassle. That being said the plan today was to have a nice breakfast on the ship and then tender into port around 10:00 as I had an excursion booked for 10:50. In the beginning the plan went great. Since I wouldn’t be back on ship until 2:00 pm I had a nice breakfast. I was up early enough that I was finished eating before 9:30 am. Princess handles tendering very well. Instead of making people stand in line, passengers report to one of the dining rooms where you get a numbered ticket and relax in the dining room while you wait to be called. By the time I got to the dining room at about 9:40 most people had already gotten ashore so my number was called very quickly. I hardly got to open my book. I got on the tender craft with no trouble and it took about 10-15 minutes to get to shore – So far , so good.

When I get to shore I walk around the port area. I look in some jewelry shops. I think I would like a bracelet to match the ring I bought last year. No luck finding anything at this point but no worries. There's not a whole lote to do right around the port so I go and sit in one of the tents out of the sun and wait for my excursion to be called. The excursion is to swim with stingrays on a sandar and then a reef snorkel. While waiting I meet this really nice family from California. WE chat, the daughters are hilarious so the time goes pretty fast. Soon it's 10:50....then 11:00...abiout 11:10 some one announces that our excursion is being delayed. It will take at least another 30 minute before we will be ready to go. Wah wah waaah. The good news is that due to the delay they will give us a 20% discount OR we can cancel and get a full refund. At the same time there is an independent tour company hawking the same itinerary which will leave in the next 5 minutes at a cost of $45 – discounted to $40 because it's getting so late. Hmmmmm choices Do I go on the original tour discounted from $69 now to $55? Do I cancel and go on the independent tour? Or do I cancel and go sit by the pool and read and work on my tan. I feel like Indiana Jones picking the Holy Grail with the Knight Templar beside me saying “Choose Wisely”

Since option three is what I plan on doing tomorrow its out. I choose to go now with the independent firm and save $15 and hope that they get me back to the port before the ship leaves. The bus ride to the boat is uneventful and we get on the boat which is pretty much a platform with benches and a canopy and railings. Everything seems to be going well big smiles all around when about half way to the sand bar one of the engines goes out and we put put the rest of the way there. Now I'm thinking we wont get back to the ship in time and the ghost of the Knight Templar is saying “You chose poorly”

The boat we took to the sandbar

We finally get to the sandbar and jump out of the boat and the stingrays come around – did I say they have buckets of calamari to feed them? They come right up to you and I got to pet several one even swam between my legs – they varied in size from about a dinner plate to about 5 feet across. It was a great time “You chose wisely”

Got back on the boat. Both engines are working – Hooray!! Did a little snorkeling and then back to the bus and the port with a half hour to spare. Back on the ship by 3:00 and famished and thirsty had a late lunch.

Had a great evening of dinner – Surf and Turf with a perfect medium rare filet - yum. Rock and roll trivia 50s and 60s edition. Some dancing at a sock hop and a magician. So the day ends happily ever after. Just goes to show that even when you have a set back or two you can still have a great day.

Day 2 - At Sea

I do love my days at sea when Aon a cruise. Today was perfect. I slept myself out and felt much refreshed. Had breakfast and then worked it off in a dance class before trivia. I found a very nice couple to join as a team. We did OK on botht the morning and afternoon trivia but didnt win either. Tehre are some hard core trivia people on this cruise – like perfect score hard core. Oh well I still had fun. After trivia I took a dip in the pool abd then some laying in the sun and listening to podcasts. Today I only sat out for about 45 minutes. It is the first day and the sun was pretty strong at noon. I didn't want to get a sunburn. Then time for lunch before 2:00 pm trivia. Naptime was next for about an hour then pool volleyball in a 7 ft pool. Got some exercise treading water. This is why I actually LOSE weight on a cruise. I am much more active than I am at home. The only time I'm sitting in front of a computer is to type this.

It was a formal night tonight, so I got “dressed up”. OK I put on a tie. Dinner was awesome – Twice baked goat cheese souffle with garlic sabayon, roasted butternut squash soup and seared divers scallops – so yummy. Skipped dessert so I could make the early show. It was a big production show with the Caribbean Princess Singers and Dancers call Do You Wanna Dance. I loved it in all its cheesy goodness. The singers and dancers did a great job. After that was a game show, the Liars Club and then Karaoke. Lot's of singers on this cruise. I just did one song, “Desparado”. I did pretty well if I do say so myself. I am amazed at the talent on board. I've been to a lot of karaoke and I have to say that this is one of the few times where no one was off key ever.

Karaoke just finished up and it's about midnight. I have to hit the sack because I have an excursion planned in the morning. Though we do gain an hour sailing into the Central time zone – woo hoo.

Day One Ft Lauderdale and Sail Away

Well the first day of vacation is done and it went as perfect as I could have wished. He travel went smoothly and I got onto the ship by 1:00 pm had a geat lunch nice plump scallops on the buffet – Yum. Got unpacked before the muster drill and afterward went up onto the deck for sail away. The weather was beautiful. Clear blue skies and not too hot. Had a lot of fun dancing. Then to shower and dinner and a few shows.

I have never sailed on the Caribbean Princess before. It's one of the older ships in the Princess fleet and it IS showing its age a bit. That being said I like it. The layout is just different enough to make it seem novel. The Comedian at the Welcome aboard show was very good - I cant wait to see his full show. There's a great guy in the Piano bar as well – fun with a lot of participation.

It's been a great day but a long one as well. Tomorrow is a day at sea so relaxation is the plan.

Good bye Florida

Dancing at the Sail Away Party

And Awaaaaay We Go!

It's here! I had everything done last night by 10:00 pm, so I was able to get a pretty good nights sleep.  I slept very soundly.  the alarm got me up at 4:00 am.  One of the best thing about the vacation will be the fact that I dont have to get up before the sun for 14 whole days. It was pretty chilly this morning as we left the house and I am in shorts and a light Polo shirt.  Totally dressed for the sun in Florida.   Left home at 4:45 am and got to the airport.  Was checked in and through security by 5:30 leaving me an hour to have a little breakfast and blog.

I'm sitting here at gate C56 waiting to board the plain.  It looks like this may ba a Springbreak tavel weekend - but what the heck. So far everyone is very subdued- mostly because they are all still half asleep.

36 Hours Until Lift Off

I have just under 36 hours before my plane takes of at 6:51 on Saturday.  I think I'm pretty prepared.  I have cleaned the house, done all my laundry.  Bought all the last minute items that you need for a trip.  Tomorrow I have to work  I hope to sneak out a little early and then home to pack and a few hours of sleep before I leave for the airport at 4:30 am.  I am seriously considering not even going to bed tomorrow.  Maybe I'll nap for a couple hours after work and then stay up until I have to go and then try and sleep on the plane.  I'll figure something out.

T Minus One Week and Counting - Welcome

Welcome to Cruise blog 2 - The Caribbean Strikes Back.  The purpose of this blog is for me to leave a daily diary of my cruise vacation to give me a record of what I plan on being a great time.  If you've stumbled upon this blog by chance or because you know me feel free keep up with the trip.  I dont promise to be entertaining but I'll try.  And this year I'm going to try to post pictures!!!

In exactly 7 days I will be settling down into bed for the first night of this year's cruise.  I am so looking forward to it.  This year we will be going on a 14 day cruise (two 7 day cruises back to back) to the Western and Eastern Caribbean.  Ports include:

Grand Cayman
Cozumel Mexico
Roatan Honduras
St Thomas US Virgin Islands
St Maarten
Nassau, The Bahamas
Princess Cay  - Twice

I have not yet booked any excursions but there are a few I think I will o on.  After several trips to Cozumel I think I may final go see the Mayan ruins at Tulum.  I've seen Altun Ha in Belize but Tulum is supposed to be more impressive.  I will probably stay on the ship in Nassau and Princess cay as I'm not into sitting on the beach or overpriced shopping.   As for the other ports It all depends on how I feel.  The only one I havent been to yet is St Maarten.

I started preparing last week by going on a bit of a shopping spree for clothes.  Today I got my hair cut. Tomorrow will get all the extras I need - sunscreen, aloe, sunglasses, kindle books, travel size aspirin, powder etc.

Lastly I have four more days of work and they are going to be the four hardest days of the year.  I really want to catch up an leave things all tied up while Im gone.  Jason is out of town this week so there will be no reason to rush home at the end of the day so I may stay late a couple days to get things done.
